On our website, under Publications, you can find online resources for reading through the Bible in one year: westwoodcc.org/publications Want to go deeper? Check out the attached discussion questions to engage more with the sermon. Thrive A New Vision for Family That Changes Everything April 11, 2021 1. Who was an adult (not a parent) in your life growing up, that made a lasting impact on your faith? What about that person causes you to remember them? 2. In your own words, how would you rephrase the points Jim made in his sermon this weekend? 3. Read Luke 2:41-47. Did Jim’s teaching on this passage change the way you think about the story of Jesus in the temple as a young boy? In what ways? Are there any cultural differences that help shed light on this story for you? 4. The Greek work oikos (family, household) in the bible does not refer to the nuclear family, but rather to a “family of families,” often including extended family members, neighbors, and even servants. Who in your life would fit into this idea of oikos? 5. What connection did Jim make between affluence and isolation? How does affluence affect isolation? Do you agree with Jim on this point? 6. This past year has been challenging in many ways, one of which being the rise of isolation for many. In what ways are you more isolated than you were a year ago? In what ways are you less isolated? 7. Each young person needs to see adults in their life following Jesus authentically. Ideally, each child would have five adults (other than their parents) investing in them in some capacity. Do you fit this role for a young person currently? If not, how can you be intentional about investing in the life of a kid or student? Next >
