In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook our health and well-being. However, when we neglect our health, it can affect every area of our lives, particularly our mental health and stamina. So, as we continue on the journey to be and love like Jesus, let’s lean into the wisdom of God and attend to our mental well-being. God has given us a good and gracious gift with life, so may we live it to the fullest.

3 John 1:2 says, “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” I read this and hear that God’s intention for us is not just survival, but complete and thriving wholeness.

During our teaching series on mental well-being called Longing for Better Days, we have a number of opportunities to grow together as we study this important topic. We invite you to explore the many opportunities below.

Childhood Trauma: Playing With the Cards We’re Dealt

Dr. Tim Johanson

Learn about the research regarding adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their predictive impact on the mental and physical health of children and the eventual adults they become. Discover practical ways for a parent to positively help a child who's experienced traumatic events and the role of early intervention.

Dr. Tim Johanson is a pediatrician, author, speaker, teacher, husband, father and “Papa” to two amazing grandchildren.

After graduating from the University of MN School of Medicine in 1986, Tim completed his pediatric residency and chief residency at the University of North Carolina. He practiced pediatrics for over 26 years in Minneapolis, focused on behavioral pediatrics.

In 2014, Tim and psychologist Michael Anderson co-authored “GIST: The Essence of Raising Life-Ready Kids”. This has given Tim and Michael opportunities to bring their message about parenting to churches, school districts, parent organizations, missionary groups, and professional consortiums. GIST was awarded the eLIT parenting book of the year in 2015.

In 2016, Tim joined the faculty at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Pediatrics Department as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics.

After retiring in 2022, he started writing his second book, this one about parenting adult children.

Walking Alongside Without Losing Yourself

Peg Roberts, LMFT

Walking alongside someone with mental health issues is a challenge and can ultimately cause us to lose ourselves and our souls in the process. We can give so much for the sake of others we no longer know what we think, feel, or want for ourselves. We can also lose our God-given direction and spiritual connection when we lose our souls. Learn what it looks like to lose yourself and how to refocus so you can reconnect with your own soul and with God.

Peg Roberts, LMFT, owner of Spirit of Hope Counseling Center, is a Licensed Marriage, Family and Individual Therapist who has worked in the field for over 25 years.

She has helped countless individuals, couples and families bring authenticity, peace and connection into their lives. She offers hope and skills for restoring relationships as well as help healing recent and early childhood trauma using a tool called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

Peg is also an author of the workbook, “Reclaiming Your Lost Soul: A Soul Seekers Life Guide for Healing Codependency.” This book is for loved ones who have challenging people in their lives to help them identify what it looks like to give up their souls, how it develops, and how to recover their soul and live with authenticity.

From Trauma to Transformation

Debbie Laaser, M.A., LMFT

Everyone has heard of post-traumatic stress, but few are familiar with the possibility of post-traumatic growth--the positive ways in which people can be transformed by their trauma. This is precisely what can happen when people move from surviving trauma to thriving from it. Practical steps are shared to help anyone moving through a traumatic event or trial in life to start asking, “God, what would you have me learn from this?” instead of “Why me?” Trauma & transformation can co-exist.

Debbie Laaser is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and was involved in recovery with her husband, Mark for over thirty years. After Mark’s passing in 2019, she became the director of their counseling center, Faithful & True, treating men struggling with sexual addiction and their spouses. Debbie has facilitated therapy groups, individual counseling, and intensives for betrayed wives for over 20 years. She authored From Trauma to Transformation, Shattered Vows, and co-authored with Mark Seven Desires and A Toolkit for Growth, and published research, “Posttraumatic Growth in Relationally Betrayed Women”.
