Serve on Saturday (S.O.S.) – May 19, 2012
Join an S.O.S. crew and demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ through hands-on service. S.O.S. is open to all ages and is a great way for individuals, families, and small groups to spend a few hours making a difference for God’s kingdom. Pre-registration is recommended. Otherwise, show up at Westwood at 8:30am on May 19th, choose from a variety of opportunities, and serve away!

What:  Serve on Saturday (S.O.S.), a community-wide service day
Who: Everyone. All ages are welcome.
Date:  Saturday, May 19, 2012
Time:  8:30 am – 12:00 noon. Pizza party to immediately follow.
Where: Meet at Westwood Community Church, Lower Level of Building A.

1.) Camp Tanadoona (Kid Friendly)
Westwood will join our friendly neighbors at Camp Tanadoona to help spruce up the grounds before the hustle and bustle of summer begins. S.O.S. tasks include trail clearing, painting and other landscaping fun.

2.) Chaska’s Christmas in May (Kid Friendly)
Westwood is partnering with the City of Chaska to repair and beautify the homes of low-income, disabled and elderly neighbors in the community during their “Christmas In May” event. Tasks include landscaping, home repair, painting, electrical work, etc.

3.) “Garden of New Beginnings” Collection Drive (Kid Friendly)
Westwood’s ACTS (Assisting Communities Through Service) team is sponsoring “The Garden of New Beginnings” to help parents better provide for their children. Items will be distributed to Love INC, World Relief, New Beginnings and New Life Family Services. Help organize and distribute items to families in need the day of S.O.S.

4.) Mary’s Place (Kid Friendly)
Mary’s Place is a transitional shelter that houses women and children living in poverty. S.O.S. crew will fellowship with resident children through a variety of activities.

5.) Summerwood of Chanhassen (Kid Friendly)
Summerwood is an assisted living home that provides care and services to seniors. S.O.S. crew will cook brunch for residents and fellowship through a variety of activities.

6.) Urban Ventures
Urban Ventures is a ministry committed to creating Christian leadership within the urban setting. S.O.S. crew will help with gardening and building upkeep needs.

7.) WEAT Furniture Drive
Westwood’s East Asia Team (WEAT) and the Hospitality Center for Chinese are sponsoring a furniture drive for University of MN students. Consider donating new or used furniture: small table and chair sets, small sofas, book cases, desks, and full or queen mattresses and bed frames. Deliver to Westwood parking lot during S.O.S. Muscles are needed to help move furniture.

8.) Drivers Needed
Drivers and vehicles are needed to transport volunteers from Westwood to S.O.S. project sites and to deliver “Garden of New Beginning” collection items to participating organizations.
